Originally by: Epsillon If you're planning on running missions as a career, train for Caldari and get a Raven.
If you're planning on being 100% Minmatar, then you want to fly a Typhoon, which will, sadly, take you ages to get enough skills to be good in it. And you'd be using 4 x Siege/Cruise launchers on it, and would be as well training for a Raven which has
a) More damage, b) Better tank and c) Better prospects for later upgrades (Navy Raven, Crystal Set, Gistii gear).
Can you tell I'm slightly bitter about having trained Minmatar?
It's funny how two players can move allong opposite paths.
I used to run missions in a Raven, got bored to death with it (much like the OP) and switched over to minmatar ships.
I've run missions in the Thrasher, Stabber, Rupture, Cyclone, Typhoon, Tempest, and now mostly run them in my Tempest Fleet, which is suppossedly garbage for level 4's.
Transversal tanking works great in the belts with Minny ships, but not really so well on missions once you get past level 2's. I did a couple of level 3's in a Stabber, using transversal, and it was pretty rough going.
Mainly, what you want is range control, and lots of kiting when you use Matari ships on missions. The key to getting good with it, is learning at what point you need to start making a run at the next npc group so you never stop firing your guns, but at the same time, they never overwhelm your tank.
There are really only two ways to control transversal well enough to hit everything you need to hit while mission running: kiting, and approaching. You will therefore require an afterburner on a Tempest to make it work.
My fitting:
6x 1200mm 2x assault launcher (tech II is a must have here for precision lights)
2x Invuln Field 1x Afterburner 1x tracking Comp 1x large shield booster (not an XL. you may need to run both shield boost and afterburner at some points during a mission, and you don't have the cap for both with an XL running)
2x Gyrostabs 1x dcu 3x PDS
5x light thermal drones (scram frigs are normally more vulnerable to thermal overall, regardless of npc type) 5x NPC specific damage medium drones
you can just as easily run an armor tank vs em/therm enemies using the exact same setup, only swap out the dcu, and the pds for 2x therm hardener, and 1x EM hardener.
Tempests *love* crystal sets, and Gistii gear, and you'll *love* what a Tempest Fleet does with them once you understand the ship.
Also, not all missions should be done with arty. If you find that everything tries to get right on top of you in a particular mission, use AC's. Otherwise, run and gun.
I've done hundreds of missions in my matari ships at this point. They are as fun as you're hoping for I think, but can be frustrating to use at first. Keep at it, and you'll be rewarded for the effort. J.A.F.O.
